Given that the Los Angeles Dodgers currently have 10 players on the disabled list, it’s rare a day passes where manager Dave Roberts isn’t prodded for any sort of injury update. Questions have often centered around Hyun-Jin Ryu, and any one or two players who were nearing a return.
Dodgers utility man Alex Guerrero fit neither of those descriptions. Though, details of Guerrero’s injury have been sparse. He battled lingering knee trouble during Spring Training and opened the year on the DL.
An MRI on Guerrero’s balky left knee revealed “minimal damage,” however surgery was not needed. After weeks of little information to go on, Roberts said the 29-year-old Cuban native is slated to participate in an extended Spring Training game over the next few days.
Guerrero’s last time playing in a Cactus League game was March 21. His DL stint was retroactive to March 25, the earliest date possible.
Guerrero batted .238/.238/.571 with one double, two home runs, two RBIs and four strikeouts in 21 plate appearances over nine games this spring. He’s to be joined in live-game action by Mike Bolsinger, who is recovering from an oblique strain suffered while warming up for a March 20 start.
Earlier this week, Roberts said the right-hander begun throwing bullpen sessions at Camelback Ranch. Bolsinger’s injury was particularly unfortunate as it came on the day he essentially was selected as the Dodgers’ fifth starting pitcher.
Bolsinger expressed confidence he’d return in time for the regular season, but he’s been relegated to the traditional timetable for recovery. Bolsinger was 6-6 with a 3.62 ERA, 3.91 FIP and 1.36 WHIP in 21 starts for the Dodgers last season.
