The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Matt Davidson to a Minor League contract with a non-roster invitation to 2021 Spring Training. Thus far the team is due to have 31 non-roster invitees in big league camp at Camelback Ranch.

Davidson spent some time with the Cincinnati Reds last season, appearing in 20 games. He hit .163/.234/.395 with three home runs. Davidson additionally has played for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox.

The Diamondbacks selected Davidson with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft. The soon-to-be-30-year-old made his MLB debut with the Diamondbacks in 2013, but the bulk of his Major League experience came with the White Sox during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Davidson appeared in 241 games over those two years, batting a combined .224/.291/.435 with 39 doubles, 46 home runs, 130 RBI and a 95 OPS+ and wRC+. Where Davidson has excelled is against left-handed pitching, as he’s hit a career .262/.339/.472 with 18 doubles, 13 homers and 47 RBI.

Along with playing first base and third base, Davidson has made six pitching appearances out of the bullpen. He threw three scoreless innings over three appearances for the White Sox in 2018, but allowed two runs in 3.1 innings across three games last season.

For his career, the right-hander has a 2.84 ERA with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.

Dodgers trade Sborz

Prior to announcing Davidson had been added to their group of non-roster invites for Spring Training, they traded Josh Sborz to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Minor League pitcher Jhan Zambrano.

Sborz had been designated for assignment as the corresponding 40-man roster move to make the Trevor Bauer signing official. Had Sborz cleared waivers, he could have been sent outright to the Minors and remained part of the Dodgers organization.
