The Los Angeles Dodgers were represented by six players in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, including Freddie Freeman, who earned his eighth career selection.
Freeman pinch-hit in the top of the sixth and grounded into an inning-ending double play. It was the 34-year-old’s only at-bat, but he stayed in the game for three defensive outs as well.
Freeman was busy as he recorded two putouts at first base. However, he found himself in a conundrum before the game.
Freeman realized he didn’t have his first base mitt after accidentally shipping it back to Los Angeles following the Dodgers’ series against the Detroit Tigers, via Jack Harris of the L.A. Times:
As Freeman dug through his locker in the NL’s visiting clubhouse a few hours before the game, he realized something was missing.
“Where’s my glove?” he asked out loud, with a laugh. “I seriously don’t have a glove.”
Turns out, as he was packing up his stuff at the end of the Dodgers’ series in Detroit on Sunday, Freeman’s first baseman’s glove was accidentally packed in the bag he sent back to Los Angeles.
Freeman was originally going to ask Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper if he had an extra mitt, but New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso let him borrow one of his:
Before first pitch, however, Freeman learned that New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso had an extra mitt with him in Texas.
“He was like, ‘Hey, I don’t a have a glove,’” Alonso chuckled. “I was like, ‘Well, that’s a problem. I have an extra one. Would you like to use one of mine?’”
Alonso ended up replacing Freeman in the bottom of the seventh and remained at first base for the rest of the game. Harper played the first five innings at the position.
Freddie Freeman ‘blessed’ to be selected to 2024 MLB All-Star Game
Freeman reflected on being named to this year’s All-Star Game and does not take the honor for granted. “Eight times, blessed to be able to go to another one,” he said earlier this month.
“I appreciate all the players voting for me. You never know when it’s your last one, so every single one is special. I can’t wait to enjoy this one too.”
