The Los Angeles Dodgers returned to the collegiate ranks with their fourth-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, taking Wyatt Crowell out of Florida State University. Crowell was selected with the 147th overall pick.
The No. 127 pick in the 2023 MLB Draft has a $516,800 slot value. Crowell is the second pitcher the Dodgers drafted in 2023.
They took high school outfielder Kendall George in competitive balance round A, followed by third baseman Jake Gelof in the second round, and high school hurler Brady Smith in the third round.
Crowell appeared in 13 games as a freshman in 2021, and emerged as one of the Seminoles’ best relief pitchers last year. Crowell’s strong performance earned him a bullpen role for Team USA’s collegiate national team.
The left-hander made one start and four relief appearances this year before undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Crowell’s fastball velocity is in the range of 94-98 mph, and it’s accompanied by a slider that has potential to be a plus-pitch, along with an occasional use of a changeup that could dictate whether he is able to develop as a starter.
The Dodgers’ bonus pool for the 2023 Draft is $7,274,600, which ranks 24th overall. Bonus pools are calculated by adding the slot values of every pick through the first 10 rounds.
