The Los Angeles Dodgers offense in 2023 was the best in franchise history in runs scored, and Max Muncy was among the driving forces in their potency.
In his sixth year with the Dodgers, Muncy opened the season with a 180 wRC+ through the end of April, posting a .238/.408/.663 slash with 11 home runs, 22 RBI, 18 runs scored and 22 walks in 103 plate appearances.
Muncy earned National League Player of the Week honors for April 17-23 after batting .389 (7-for-18) with five home runs, seven RBI, nine walks, one stolen base and five runs scored across seven games.
Muncy tied a Dodgers record for a 13-game stretch with 10 home runs, giving him the early Major League lead. But the blistering start was followed by multiple stretches of inconsistency.
On the season, Muncy hit .212/.333/.475 with 17 doubles, one triple, 36 home runs, 105 RBI, 95 runs scored and 85 walks. Muncy’s 14.7% walk rate ranked fifth in baseball, two slots behind his newest Dodgers teammate, Shohei Ohtani.
He joined a quartet of Dodgers alongside Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and J.D. Martinez to drive in 100 runs. It was the 15th time in league history that four player on one team tallied 100 RBI in the same season.
Muncy was named a finalist at third base for the NL Silver Slugger, but ultimately came up short in a group that consisted of Nolan Arenado (St. Louis Cardinals), Manny Machado (Padres) and Austin Riley (Braves).
Max Muncy 2023 highlight
In the Dodgers’ April 10 matchup with the San Francisco Giants, Muncy tallied his best single-game performance of the season.
Opening the game with a walk in the first inning, he followed it up with a three-run homer in the third and grand slam in the seventh. With three hits and seven RBI on the day, Muncy reached base each time he came to the plate.
The Dodgers won in lopsided fashion, 9-1.
2024 outlook
With a new deal that keeps him under contract through the 2025 season, and potentially 2026 by way of a team option, Muncy is entrenched with the Dodgers for the next few years.
In what he provides offensively, both power and at-bat quality, the Dodgers will lean on him once again to be a run producing threat. Muncy’s walk rate, and ability to swing at only 23.4% of pitches outside the strike zone (28th in MLB), are all incredibly valuable tools.
