After a brief stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021, Shane Greene re-signed with the organization during Spring Training this year.
The veteran right-hander posted a 4.05 ERA, 6.62 FIP and 1.20 WHIP across 6.2 innings pitched (nine appearances) in his first season with the Dodgers prior to being designated for assignment as the corresponding move to activating AJ Pollock off the 10-day injured list.
Green began the 2022 season with Triple-A Oklahoma City and went 0-1 with a 5.87 ERA and 2.22 WHIP over 7.2 innings of work (seven games). Despite struggling, L.A. selected Greene’s contract on May 15, and he would log two scoreless innings against the Philadelphia Phillies that evening.
However, Greene’s stay at the Major League level did not last long as he was designated for assignment two days later as the corresponding move to activating David Price off the COVID-19 injured list.
Greene elected free agency and signed a Minor League contract with the New York Yankees at the end of May. It marked a homecoming as he was selected in the 15th round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the organization.
The 34-year-old went 5-4 with a 3.78 ERA, 3.73 FIP and 1.40 WHIP during his only season in the Bronx in 2014 (15 games, 14 starts). He was traded to the Detroit Tigers later that offseason as part of a three-team deal that included the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Greene began his second stint with the Yankees in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and pitched to a 2-1 record, 5.40 ERA and 1.54 WHIP across 26.2 innings pitched (20 appearances).
After nearly two months in the Minors, the Yankees selected Greene’s contract on July 23, and he pitched later that night against the Baltimore Orioles. Greene allowed two runs on one hit — a two-run homer by Ramón Urías — and one walk while collecting one strikeout.
Greene was designated for assignment after the appearance but re-signed with the Yankees on a Minor League contract and spent he remainder of the 2023 season in Triple-A.

Greene’s best performance of the 2022 season came in his only MLB appearance with the Dodgers when he threw two scoreless innings against the Phillies, allowing two hits and recording one strikeout.
2023 outlook
Greene is a free agent, and given his struggles over the past two seasons, will likely have to settle for another Minor League contract. The prospect of him returning to the Majors could depend on his performance in Spring Training.
