Always looking to add depth to their organization, the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Jimmie Sherfy off waivers from the San Francisco Giants this past July.
The right-hander went 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA, 5.33 FIP and 1.22 WHIP in 10 appearances for the Giants before joining the Dodgers. He made his Dodgers debut against the Colorado Rockies on July 16 and tossed a scoreless inning.
Sherfy retired four of five batters faced in his next outing against San Francisco, becoming the first pitcher in MLB history to appear in games for both the Dodgers and Giants in the same season.
Sherfy made two more appearances before being placed on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation on July 24. He was transferred to the 60-day IL one week later, which ended his season.
In four games with the Dodgers, Sherfy went 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA, 5.48 FIP and 0.69 WHIP. He finished the year at 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA, 5.37 FIP and 1.07 WHIP in 14 appearances between L.A. and the Giants.
Sherfy’s 2021 highlight
Prior to sustaining a season-ending elbow injury, Sherfy looked like a hidden gem as he allowed just one hit and no runs over his first three appearances with the Dodgers.
2022 outlook
The Dodgers outrighted Sherfy, along with Scott Alexander and Andy Burns, off their 40-man roster after each cleared waivers in early November.
Sherfy opted against accepting the Minor League assignment and elected free agency. He had the right to reject it due to previously being outrighted in his career.
The 29-year-old figures to sign a Minor League contract with an invitation to 2022 Spring Training and will again provide organizational depth either for the Dodgers or another club.
